Latin Killers

As stated on their Facebook page, the Latin Killers is: "a project based en San Francisco, California by Capitan Walas (Guitarras), Gonzo (Vocal y lyrics), and Dave Shul (guitar founder of Michael Franti & Spearhead)". Their music is full of wonderful beats and rhythms that are not only modern, but also "tip their hat" to that of the older Rock en Español.

Last week I got to speak to Gonzo regarding the band, their latest release and future plans. I started this interview with the general greeting and explanation as to what this website is about. First thing I asked was how Gonzo's time in quarantine was going to which he answered, " well, just here a bit confined and all in San Francisco, but all good." It was only natural to follow up that question by asking whether it is easier or harder to work during music to which he said, "it's a bit hard with this Pandemic. It's hard to concentrate. Sometimes my mind is elsewhere, but there are moments of clarity." It's true. Although most of us are home, it can become an over all overwhelming experience.

We next discussed their album "Viajeros del Tiempo" and I ask Gonzo why they chose that title and he said that it was a combination of different things and went on to emphasizing the people featured in this album including artists like Robert Quintana and Spearhead. Besides an interesting title for an album and consequently there single Cúrame, there is an interesting video to accompany it.

A few weeks ago Latin Killers released their latest music video for their song "Cúrame", which was filmed in Mexico City and San Francisco. It's a video that features the current state of the world with a side of dancing. I told Gonzo it was fitting with the times and further asked whether that was always the intention for the video. "The album was made pre-pandemic but the song references the situation. The director wanted  to incorporate the pandemic and the model dancing, Romina, did a great job too". Indeed, the concept and overall vibes of the song felt strangely familiar and surprising to see in a music video.

Before ending the interview, I asked him what band influenced them the most and he said, "I have always loved Rock music. I am a rocker at heart. Bands that have influenced us (and me) are Maná, Enanitos Verdes, Soda Stereo and much more". After he answered that, I ended this lovely conversation by asking what future plans include for Latin Killers. "We are already preparing a stream for next weeks so everyone can listen to it live. We are also preparing a band for the live tour. It will be a top team."

A big thank you to Latin Killers and all our readers!
