"Out there, contemporary art is key."
When Jam, the owner of DCC, decided to move back to El Paso from LA, he realized the people here at the border needed to be more exposed to contemporary art. The fact that many people do not realize that street art is contemporary art led Jam to open the only real contemporary art gallery in El Paso with a fun and youthful way that would still do justice to the artists and their art.
Jam moved back to El Paso from California and was living off of the money he had saved. With the little amount of money he had left, he was able to pay the first month's rent of what is now DCC. He used the last 84 dollars he had left to open up the gallery, this became an opportunity for him to make absolutely everything and to up-cycle some old furniture. The end result was Dream Chasers Club a space that reflects Jam's passion for contemporary art. The concept and base on which DCC is founded on is "Chase dreams, not money".
"Money can get you to the next level, but passion is what takes you there."
Jam always wants to make sure that people don't think DCC is him, but rather that people see it as it's own individual image. He wants to make sure that the people of El Paso have an opinion on the gallery and not on him, so that they can appreciate it on its own. This is why Jam decided to go by this nickname, which started off as something he could tag on a wall and has now turned into a safety net giving that sense of mystery while also giving him a space outside of DCC.
Dream Chasers Club is currently showing "Eyes of the Soul" by Carolina H. Villarreal that was created by an 18 year old student from Coronado high school. Jam liked her raw talent for such a young age and after seeing that Carolina already had a body of work to show him, he was sold on her show. Carolina has more impressionistic abstract work that relates more to the concept of spirituality. She is a self-taught artist with no formal training, and she has a lot of talent for such a young age, probably more than she even realizes.
In the two years that DCC has been open, Jam has had two favorite shows. His first favorite show was by his friend Diego from California. Jam remember's Diego's passion and dedication to the show that he even flew over 80 pieces in his luggage from California. His second favorite show was the MF Doom show that almost felt like a concert, even though there was no music. The fact that he could share something he loves with the people of El Paso was also very cool. Everyone was united for the same reason: art.
Not only can you go visit DCC during their normal hours, but you can also make appointments to go see art in a more private setting. The only thing you will be asked for is at least $30 dollars to compensate for the gallery being open just for you. (Hint Hint!) This is a very good idea for a date, when you can do something different and out of your comfort zone and take a date to a private date at the gallery. Jam mentioned that it always a treat to see younger generations or couples sitting on the bench, just admiring the art and taking it in. He hopes people can appreciate the art, rather than see it as a cool place to take a picture at.
Next time you go visit Dream Chasers Club you should take a look at their merch because everything you see there is limited edition. This means that only small amounts of t-shirts, hats, stickers, etc. exist and once they are gone, they are gone forever!!!!! If you see something you love, don't hesitate to buy it because you may never see it again! Pro tip: If you see something you like online, you can also buy it there to make sure you get something before it's gone.
Lastly, if you've visited DCC already, we highly encourage you to go visit them again. The gallery is always changing and being rearranged to give you a completely new experience every time you want to visit. If you haven't been to DCC yet, then you need to go and visit them. Trust us, you will not regret it!
Here are some pictures, you are going to have to go see the rest yourself. No picture will do justice to all the great artwork in there!!
